Thiago X. de Melo
Hi there! I’m a PhD Candidate in the Department of Philosophy at Syracuse University. Before that, I took an MA in Logic and Metaphysics at Rio de Janeiro Federal University, and a BA in Philosophy at Ceará Federal University.
My research has revolved around properties, relations, and categories. In metaphysics, as in Jenga, one is forced to have a foundation that is parsimonious and yet strong enough to support everything else. Currently, I am investigating how properties and relations must be if we want them to constitute a good basis for a lot else—for similarity and dissimilarity among things, essence, dependence, characterization, privation, intrinsicality, change, category mistakes, etc. Click on research for more on this, and to see what else I have been up to.
I enjoy my research area, but I love teaching more broadly too. I have taught and TA’ed for courses in ethics, logic, metaphysics and epistemology, philosophy of science, human nature, free will, media ethics, and others, at Syracuse University and Universidade Federal de Alagoas.
